Tokyo 2020: Olympic marathon and race walks moved to Sapporo over heat fears

The race and marathon walking at the Tokyo Olympics of next summer have now been moved into Sapporo – 800km to the north because of its cooler states.
This summer measures to combat the heat in the Western capital, including better shade and water sprays, have been trialled at evaluation events.
International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said athlete welfare had beenat the center of fluctuations.
Sapporo can be as much as six degrees cooler than Tokyo in peak summertime.
International Association of Athletics Federations president Lord Coe said:Giving athletes the best platform for their performances inside the environment they are in is fundamental to all major events, and we will work with the organisers to make the very best marathon and race walk courses for next years Olympic Games.
